Binga Ravaged By Destructive Floods
Heavy rainfall over the past three days has resulted in massive flooding in low-lying areas in Binga, Matabeleland North province. Reports indicate that hundreds of villagers are marooned and await evacuation from the Civil Protection Unit (CPU).
Scores of villagers sought shelter in trees and others slept in the mountains after rivers burst their banks, locals said.
Several bridges have been swept away, while some have been damaged – preventing emergency responders from reaching some of the affected populations.
“Villagers are marooned in Sinakoma ward and the situation is dire. Livestock was swept away in the Sungwale area,” the Binga Residents Association tweeted.
Zimtrending learnt from the locals that the main road connecting Binga and Siabuwa has been cut off. The place is low lying and needs a bridge. A stretch of that road has been taken away by floods. No vehicle can access Siabuwa from Binga centre and vice versa.
Let’s pay more attention to the Binga floods. One person so far confirmed dead, many others injured and homeless. Helicopters sent to rescue but slowed down by weather. 34 families were rescued after being marooned. These pics via @BingaResidents show the damage to infrastructure pic.twitter.com/Hm7WIClH2O
