Nudity in Zimbabwe, Africa and Beyond

Written by Vimbai Zimuto😎

Zimbabwe like any other African country is very conservative due to the Christian way of life
that came in with the missionaries as a way to colonise us. However, that is a conversation
for another day.
Nudity has always existed in Africa and we cannot keep on ignoring facts that it is there. We
have nudity in Arts, Nudity for protest and nudity for Culture then just Nudity for
sexualisation.

Nudity in arts

Nude is a very big part of arts, its one of the best ways to express a lot of different
emotional expressions. Despite our so called cultural immorality, religious immorality and
political differences. Nudity in art is not meant to attack anyone but to speak volumes of
different feelings and challenge the human mind to think completely out of the box. This
can be a bigger voice for Loss, extreme anger, rejection, happiness, free spirit and the list
goes on. However the biggest way nudity has worked in the arts is in the western world
where its big business in sexualisation. Do you think Nudity in arts will ever be accepted in
Zimbabwe? Do you think it is possible to speak our feelings through nude art? How do you
take it when your relative choses Nude art as a passion? Does nudity make or break
relationships?

Nudity for protest

You would see, that there are some people hurt to the core by the systems in their
respective municipalities, countries, and homes to a point where they feel its time to bare it
all in the face of their oppressor using their naked bodies in public. This is called nude for
protest. Sometimes you cry your lungs out and still you’re not heard until you choose to
display your precious body in protest. What are your thoughts concerning nudity for protest
in general?? Do you think nudity for protest works in Zimbabwe? Do you think it has a place
in our society and why? What is that lip or influence that could spark a radical change
towards nudity?

Nudity as a Culture

There is a whole lot of Nudity in African cultures. Mostly it is a way to differentiate girls from
women and mothers in terms of maturity. For some it is just a normal way of life and has no
dirty minds involves. Then there is one that is used as punishment for misdeeds, a
correctional measure for witchcraft, theft, kidnap, RAPE, adultery, infidelity, sodomy and so
forth. In Zimbabwe its part of our ancient history, up to the time people wore nhembe
(animal skin) but still women showing their breasts unashamed. Do you think Nudity is
important in Human life? Do you think it is important to preserve nudity in your own
understanding and why? What does it mean in our culture, or daily life for a man or woman
to be nude? Do you think nudity can end body shaming, why and how? Is it a matter of
clashing with modernity or it is just confined to the rigidity of individuals, specifically in
Zimbabwe?

Nudity for sexualisation

We all know that sex sells and nudity is part of its greater marketing strategy. This has
existed for centuries and has been the most common and oldest way to sell products, be it
house hold, clothes or even cars. However, In Africa it’s a taboo and regarded as immoral,
unpleasant, and so forth. Most marketing works better with a nude female or male and can
sell any product in so many different ways. Don’t get me wrong, prostitution and nudity for
marketing are completely two different things, although most people in Africa put a thin line
between the two. How do you view nudity for marketing in Zimbabwe? Does nudity sell
anything in Zimbabwe?
