Police in Nigeria announced Tuesday that they raided an illegal gay wedding over the weekend, arresting nearly 200 people who were brazenly flouting the country’s anti-gay laws.

Officers said they received a tip about the event taking place in Warri in southern Nigeria and mobilized a task force to break up the wedding before the “unholy matrimony” vows could be exchanged.
Police spokesperson Edafe Bright said:
We will not stand idly by while degenerate elements in our society attempt to undermine traditional values and corrupt the morals of our youth.
Bright said 67 people were charged so far, while most of the other 130 claimed they were not involved in the wedding but were designers, photographers and models who had been hired for the event.
Their excuses do not absolve them. They enabled this sacrilege to take place on our soil.
Many of the arrested begged for mercy and swore they were not actually gay.
But Bright said police found wedding programs, flower arrangements and other evidence that a gay marriage ceremony was planned.

During the raid, officers also uncovered an alleged se_xual assault of an intoxicated wedding guest by another man who remains at large.
Not only were they breaking the law, but they brought further shame and sin into their den of iniquity.
Under Nigeria’s 2014 anti-gay law, those convicted of the crime face up to 14 years imprisonment.
Gay marriage, relationships and LGBTQ groups are strictly banned and taboo in the deeply conservative country.

Police are still searching for other suspects who escaped the mass roundup.
