Five Zimbo Men Arrested in Botswana for Child Trafficking
In a concerning development, five Zimbabwean men have been apprehended in Botswana on charges of child trafficking. The arrests occurred after authorities intercepted five separate vehicles, each transporting undocumented children believed to be from Zimbabwe and en route to South Africa.
The identities of the five men remain undisclosed at this time, but they now face serious allegations related to human trafficking. The exact number of children involved has not been revealed, but officials have confirmed their safety. Currently, the children are under the care of a social protection unit in Francistown, Botswana.
Superintendent Oteng Nganga, the Station Commander at Matsiloje Police Station in Gaborone, recounted a particularly distressing incident. According to Nganga, the children, including a four-year-old girl, were crammed into a poorly ventilated, dark vehicle.
This incident is not isolated. Last December, the South African Border Management Agency intercepted buses carrying over 400 young children from Zimbabwe. These children were traveling without parents or legal guardians, and authorities labeled the cases as trafficking.

However, some organizations representing foreign nationals in South Africa argued that the children might have been visiting their parents working in the country during the holidays. Ultimately, the buses were sent back to Zimbabwe.

In another incident during the same month, two additional Zimbabweans were arrested for allegedly trafficking 14 undocumented children found on a bus.
Child trafficking is a complex and alarming problem across Southern Africa. Between 2002 and 2022, nearly 2,000 victims were trafficked in the East, Horn, and Southern Africa regions. These victims faced various forms of exploitation, including sexual exploitation (47%) and forced labor (35%). Shockingly, 64% of African trafficking victims are children.
While the authorities work tirelessly to combat child trafficking, it remains crucial to raise awareness, strengthen protection efforts, and hold traffickers accountable. Understanding the trends and perspectives surrounding child trafficking is essential for effective intervention.
