Police have warned against defying government’s decree of suspending gatherings of more than 100 people amid reports of church gatherings surpassing the mandatory margin.

The warning comes against the backdrop of two cases of Covid-19 that have been recorded in Zimbabwe over the weekend as the nation is encouraged to take maximum precautions to prevent the spread of coronavirus by limiting travel and outdoor activities.

In an interview with H-Metro, National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said church leaders must not be arrogant when urged to refrain from large gatherings.

“We have received messages that some large church gatherings are taking place country wide.

“We have responded and spoke to some church leaders who said they are taking heed of the call to maintain the 100 people margin.

“As police, we urge the public to desist from large gatherings and we have a mandate to enforce government’s directives especially when it concerns the safety of the nation.

“All those who are defying the directive are doing so at their own peril,” said Ass Com Nyathi.

Two cases of Covid-19 had been recorded in Zimbabwe on Saturday, according to Health and Child Care Minister Dr Obadiah Moyo.
