Sunday Reflections: Wisdom and Understanding God's Word

Today's readings all speak to us about the importance of wisdom and understanding.

Sunday Reflections: Jealousy Ruins Relationships

In the first reading, from the Book of Wisdom 7:7-11, we hear that wisdom is “the breath of the power of God, and a pure emanation of the glory of the Almighty“. Wisdom is the source of all good things, and it is the path to true happiness. Theologian Thomas Aquinas wrote: “Wisdom is the breath of the power of God, and a pure emanation of the glory of the Almighty.”

In the second reading, from the Letter to the Hebrews 4:12-13, we are told that God's word is “living and active, sharper than any sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart”. God's word is a powerful tool that can help us to understand ourselves and the world around us.

In the Gospel reading, from Mark 10:17-30, we see Jesus teaching about the difficulty of entering the kingdom of God.

He tells a rich young man who asks him what he must do to inherit eternal life that he must sell all that he has and give it to the poor. The young man goes away sad, for he is very rich.

Jesus' teaching here is a reminder that it is not easy to follow God's path. We must be willing to give up our worldly possessions and our own desires. But if we do, we will be rewarded with eternal life.

St. Augustine of Hippo said that “the heart is restless until it finds its rest in God.” This is a beautiful expression of the human longing for wisdom and understanding. We all want to find meaning and purpose in our lives, and we all want to be happy. But true happiness can only be found in God.

Sunday Reflections: Marriage is Both Natural and Supernatural

So let us ask God for wisdom and understanding. Let us ask him to help us to understand his word and to follow his path. And let us remember that the greatest gift we can give to ourselves and to others is the gift of our love.

Amen.
