There has been chatter that the streaming service might pull out of the South African market. However, there is no official announcement or confirmation from Amazon Prime Video that it will exit the country.
Prime Video had been expanding its presence and content in Africa, signing deals with local producers and talents in Nigeria and South Africa.
Lamentations as Amazon Prime Cancells SA Productions
The global streaming service owned by Amazon, the e-commerce giant, entered the SA market in 2016. Since then, it added more local and regional content and features.
Amazon Prime Video offers a variety of TV shows and movies, including original and exclusive content, such as The Boys, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Grand Tour, and Coming 2 America.
However, it has since emerged that Amazon Prime Video will bow out of South Africa.
Entertainment blogger Phil Mphela reported that the service has pulled the plug on all productions in the works. He shared on his X account:
“Amid rumours that the Amazon-owned streamer may pull out of Mzansi, few local productions slated to air on the platform have abruptly been iced. Shows and movies in South Africa have been hauled from development and production. This follows the company’s job cuts, which started in March 2023. However, it looked like Africa would be spared the carnage.”
Phil added that Amazon Prime Video has not been promoting and marketing some of its latest finished South African productions.
