Nancy Chitsiga, a 23-year-old woman from Harare, has been remanded in custody on charges of infanticide. She appeared before Magistrate Apollonia Marutya on Tuesday.
The State alleges that Chitsiga gave birth at home on July 26. Prosecutor Thomas Chanakira presented the case, claiming that Chitsiga chocked the newborn to death shortly after delivery.
Following the infant’s death, Chitsiga reportedly wrapped the body in plastic and disposed of it in a bin. She then allegedly dumped the bin at an illegal dumpsite.
The body of the newborn was discovered by two teenage boys who were attempting to burn litter at the site. The discovery led to Chitsiga’s arrest and subsequent charges.
Meanwhile, Harare is gearing up for a significant transformation as the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), in collaboration with the Harare Metropolitan Police, embarks on a comprehensive crackdown targeting street vendors, touts, and illegal car wash operators.

This operation, aptly named “Operation Guta Ngarigare Rakachena” (Operation Clean City), is being launched in preparation for the high-profile 44th Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit, scheduled for August 17th.
The crackdown, which has already commenced, includes a wide array of targets from unlicensed vendors to illegal pirate taxis, also known as “mushikashika.”
Only licensed vendors are permitted to operate. Those found non-compliant will be issued yellow cards, with repeat offenders facing red cards and possible detention.

Illegal taxi operators and their touts are also being targeted. The crackdown aims to eliminate dangerous parking, illegal pickups, and drop-offs in a nationwide initiative dubbed “No To Touts.”
