Devland Cash and Carry's MMC Visit: A Comedy of Errors
In a scene straight out of a sitcom, workers at Devland Cash and Carry had a frantic morning yesterday, scrambling to remove expired goods from their shelves. The reason? A tweet from MMC for Public Safety, Mgcini Tshwaku, announcing his visit.
Tshwaku, accompanied by former MMC of Public Safety and Chief of JMPD David Tembe, along with EMS and a City of Johannesburg representative, arrived to inspect the store. But the workers were ready.
“Why did the MMC tweet that he was coming here?” they asked, suggesting that someone tipped off the store manager and owner, leading to a hasty clean-up operation.
“It was a quick check, they didn't thoroughly go through everything,” one employee whispered.

“And don't get me started on the illegal foreign nationals working here. They were all sent home this morning because authorities were coming. This place doesn't comply at all.”
During the inspection, Tshwaku discovered that some of Devland Cash and Carry's “Goldi” chicken portions lacked expiry dates, prompting an order to remove the stock.
Store manager Zaheer Paruk defended himself, blaming the supplier. “It's the supplier that didn't put on the date. There's no way I can go through every single packet of chicken portions checking for dates,” he said.

Former MMC Tembe was less than impressed with the expired food found in storage. “Why are they keeping all this expired food? They should be getting rid of it and have it destroyed because next they'll repackage and sell to our kids,” he remarked.
