Assassination Attempt On Fort Hare Vice Chancellor

Universities South Africa has expressed shock over the apparent assassination attempt on Fort Hare University’s Vice-Chancellor. Shots were fired at Sakhela Buhlungu’s vehicle outside his home on Friday night.
His bodyguard Mboneli Vesele was gunned down in the incident, eNCA News said quoting Phethiwe Matutu the Chief Executive Officer of Universities South Africa. Matutu is cited as saying:
The board of universities of SA is deeply saddened by this act and condemns it. There are issues pertaining to the university, SIU is investigating a number of universities on tenders and fraudulent issuing of qualifications.
Buhlungu escaped unharmed, Eyewitness News reported citing the university’s university spokesperson JP Roodt. He is quoted as saying:
The Vice-Chancellor is unharmed, survived the assassination attempt and is currently at a safe location.
Roodt has also asked people sharing videos and images of the targeted vehicle to refrain from doing so, out of respect.
Meanwhile, Free State University Professor Jonathan Jansen has condemned the shooting, saying this is what happens when people stand against corruption. Jonathan Jansen said on Twitter:
The attempted assassination of the Fort Hare University Vice-Chancellor must be condemned at the highest level; his security detail did not survive. This is what happens when you take a stand against corruption. The struggle is real 😤
The university says it will be providing trauma counselling to students, staff and Vesele’s family.
