Makhadzi has Received R230 000 in the Past Year

The Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture says that over the last 14 months, they have arranged for Limpopo singer Makhadzi to perform at various national events, with her receiving up to R230 000.

This comes after Makhadzi revealed that she had to borrow money from a loan shark to attend the BET Awards in Los Angeles, USA, sparking an outrage.

In a statement yesterday, the department spokesperson, Zimasa Velaphi, said that they have been supporting Makhadzi through bookings.

DSAC strongly rejects the assertion that it has not supported Makhadzi. Over the past 14 months, Makhadzi has been booked by DSAC to perform in several national engagements, receiving as much as 230 000 rands,” Velaphi said. “The department commits to continuing to support creatives through various opportunities and to taking their talents to communities locally and internationally,” Velaphi added.

Last week, Makhadzi's manager, Lucky Tshilimandila, said that he was unaware that Makhadzi, real name Ndivhudzannyi Ralivhona, had borrowed money from a loan shark for her seat in business class.

“I am not aware of the Mashonisa story, but I heard about it, and we are looking into the matter,” he said. “The Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture has always supported Makhadzi in her shows and concerts. The awards came at a crucial time in our country, which was during the elections, and we understood. We are currently in talks with arts and culture, and we welcome their support,” he added.

Last year, the MaGear singer confirmed she owes the South African Revenue Services (SARS) over R6 million in unpaid taxes and VAT since getting her breakthrough in the music industry. A source accused her previous label, Open Mic, and former manager, Rita Dee, whom she worked with before joining the label.

“She has been paying the taxes, as it is her responsibility to do so,” her manager concluded.

On July 14, the newly elected Premier of Limpopo, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, will be hosting a special welcome breakfast for Makhadzi following her return from the BET Awards.

“Her success story continues to inspire countless young girls, showing them that they too can achieve international acclaim. The celebration will commence with a welcome breakfast, followed by a vibrant street parade,” the Premier said.
