Shocking: Rashford is Worth More Than Messi & Ronaldo
In a potentially controversial announcement, Marcus Rashford (22) has been valued more than Lionel Messi (32) and Cristiano Ronaldo (34) in the latest rankings released by CIES Observatory algorithm.Â
The CIES Football Observatory opens a new exciting decade of football analytics with the exclusive publication of its traditional list of the big-5 league players with the greatest estimated transfer values.
At the top three positions of the table are Kylian Mbappé (France and Paris St-Germain), Raheem Sterling (England and Manchester City), as well Mohammed Salah (Egypt and Liverpool).
Issue number 279 of the Weekly Post presents the 166 footballers in the big-5 valued at more than €50 million.
Marcus Rashford has been valued at £134m, while Lionel Messi was valued at £125. Cristiano Ronaldo (34), is further down the list with a value of £80.3.Â
Ronaldo has been valued less than players like Mason Mount (£94.1) of Chelsea, Dele Alli (£95.6) of Tottenham and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£110.5) of Liverpool.Â
But it is the valuing of Marcus Rashford over that of Lionel Messi that will have tongues wagging. Rashford has had an amazing 2019-2020 season, scoring 17 goals for club & country in 29 appearances. This is his best season yet since breaking through from the Manchester United Academy.
A possible explanation of the valuation is that younger players are generally worth more than older players and clubs are prepared to pay more for them. In this case, Messi is 10 years older than Rashfiord and he has significantly fewer playing years left in him.
Even in the Ronaldo case, the players valued over him highlighted above are much younger than him.Â
Below is a list of the valuation of the players by CIES.
