There is a heavy police presence in Harare’s central business district as well as outlying suburbs following reports of planned protests. The government has warned that it will ruthlessly crush all protests and that the police will be given shoot-to-kill orders.

iHarare has learned that civil servants are planning to protest against poor remuneration and the worsening economic conditions in the country. The Apex Council, the umbrella body for all unions representing civil servants recently turned down a proposed pay increase of $2 000 per month from the government saying that it is grossly inadequate.

Opposition groups and civil society organizations are also planning to hold massive demonstrations to commemorate the deaths of the people killed by the government last January in the wake of protests against a fuel increase.
