Sandringham High School Headmaster Embroiled in Corruption Scandal
Trending on social media is a memo, allegedly exposing corruption at Sandringham High School.
The Sandringham High School Headmaster is alleged to be entangled in corruption that is running the school into the ground.
He is being accused of misusing school funds for his own personal gain. Below is the memo
Sandringham Parents
Sandringham Staff
Sandringham SDC
Sandringham School Board of Directors
The Responsible Authority – MCZMinistry of Primary and Secondary Education – Chegutu District Office
-Chinhoyi Provincial Education Office
– Head officeThis document serves to expose the rampant corruption perpetrated by Sandringham High School Headmaster, John Mahaso, who is hell-bend on enriching himself at whatever cost to the school.
The details below need to be investigated as a matter of urgency as silence is complicity.
1. Abuse of school vehicles and fuel
The Head has personalized school vehicles. His abuse of school fuel is astonishing.Shockingly, the school buys 10 000 litres of diesel every term, the bulk of which is for his personal use• For the past five years, he has been staying at his farm, 25 km away, and drives to and from school daily, which translates into 50 km per day and 1000 km monthly, (4 times their monthly allocation), saddling the school with unbearable fuel and service costs,
• Basically all his farming fuel costs are financed by the school, as he almost daily, unashamedly fills up 20 litre plastic containers and jerry-cans with school fuel before taking it to his farm.
• The vehicle has been so personalized that he takes it away for weekends & even when on leave for personal use (still filling up at the school).
• Considering how much fuel the school buys per term, it’s sad that this year (2019), students, some preparing for ZIMSEC public Exams, have been forced to forego evening studies due to a purported lack of fuel to run the small generator that powers the school, the fuel being reserved for running his personal errands & farming activities. (Parents, ask your children if they ever had a single day of evening study 3rd term, the reason proffered & if they remember school trucks ever being parked for lack of fuel!!!!!)
2 Abuse of school farming inputs
• Mahaso has deliberately, totally destroyed all farming activities in the school, to ensure he supplies the school with beef, pork, chicken, maize from his farm at inflated prices he himself decides.
• On many occasions, he has commandeered the school tractor (fuelled and driven by the school driver) to plough his fields in return for a few tonnes of maize after harvesting.
• He has unscrupulously channelled all school inputs to his farm, in particular, last year’s (2018) Command fertilizer
• Incredulously, for the privilege of taking basically all of his stock feeds from the school, he sells his produce back to the school at inflated prices and demands cash in payment. All cash reserves in the school are now reserved for his personal use.
• His greed has forced the school to divert from its diet, forcing learners to partake tea and mbambaira from his farm at prices well beyond that of buying bread.
• In August, he forced the school to buy a ‘breeding bull’ from his farm at a cost of $15 000. This was done to raise money to send his son to China. He has also “borrowed” from the school in order to finance the same son’s trips to China on the basis he will pay back the money, which of course he never did.
• Recently the school bought over 60 calves disguised as heifers from a local judge’s farm, and he rewarded himself with five heifers for facilitating the deal.
Now more than half of those bought by the school have since died due to deliberate non-buying of vaccines. This being done to maintain the school as a prime market for his inflated beef.
3.1 Bogus Auctions designed to strip the school. This sad story of corruption by one man seems to have no bounds.
• Recently the school used to own a UD truck, which he condemned just a few weeks after it was serviced at a cost of US$15 000. A few weeks later he bought that same lorry in a bogus auction for 9 tonnes of maize (equivalent to US$3000)
• The school now hires the same lorry from him at exorbitant prices.
• In other astounding cases these so-called auctions, he has stripped the school of deep freezers, generators and lawnmowers.
3.2. School projects run for his personal benefit.
• He has hired bogus contractors to develop the school ground at a cost of US$14 000. The ground was never developed and money never recovered.• In exchange for splitting profits, he sold one of the school trucks to his friend whom he had hired to pave the school.
• Another of his friend Mrs Mtandwa had to hire his son as a condition to get a contract to install back up batteries at exorbitant cost to the school. The batteries have since ceased to function as they were never suitable in the first place.
• Other deals he has his fingers in include the supply of school uniforms and bedspreads (his wife).
• He hired a contractor to build an unplanned US$8000 greenhouse in exchange for the same contractor building one at his farm for free.
4. unfair handling of disciplinary issues
• A form 4 boy was ordered to walk around the school semi-naked as punishment for putting on multiple clothing, another was ordered to take his bed to the pigsty for allegedly being dirty.• A form 3 boy had to be chaperoned by his grandfather at the school this year for spurious allegations of a misdemeanour. These shocking cases of impunity by the head were swept under the carpet
• This is in contrast to incidents for example, when the Principal’s son, a learner at Sandringham at the time got involved in an accident driving a stolen vehicle on his way back from a beer binge in Norton, unsurprisingly for a man so corrupt nothing was ever done to these untouchables.
5.Awarding themselves outrageous benefit. The school administration made up of the head and his wife (senior woman) have awarded themselves:
• Rtgs 3000-00 every month
• Monthly groceries consisting of 5-litre cooking oil, 5 kg sugar, 20 kg mealie meal, salt, liquid soap
• In addition each member of the admin gets 2 litres fresh milk, 2 loaves of bread every day
• Other benefits include 5 chickens, 10 kg of beef every month from school stocks
6. Unprofessional conduct
On many occasions, the Head insults teaching and non-teaching staff, particularly during assembly in a manner which does not augur well professionally. He boasts of links and protection from provincial education and head office.
In light of this and many other cases, parents, SDC, board, Responsible Authority and the Ministry need to get to the bottom of these issues to salvage the school before it collapses on its knees. There are no books, intermittent wi-fi, poor meals, the school runs without water most of the time, the list is endless. This is due to corruption in the school.
Students and staff are suffering, the environment is no longer conducive as it is set up to benefit the head and a few of his cronies. So parents whenever these top-ups are called for, you must be aware that you are financing the luxurious lifestyle of a deeply corrupt and unrepentant headmaster who doesn’t care a fig about your children
