Isau Mupfumi, a prominent figure in the public transport sector of Manicaland Province, has been hospitalized under strict police surveillance following his arrest. The arrest came after a violent confrontation involving touts in the city of Mutare.
Mupfumi, who had recently moved to Harare temporarily, was taken to a medical facility around midnight after complaining of illness while in police detention.
The businessman is said to have recently suffered a stroke after he lost US$60 000 to robbers, and his condition is said to have gotten worse because of the arrest. His arrest was part of an ongoing police operation addressing the violent clashes among bus-rank marshals in Mutare.
The altercation at the Old Harare rank in Mutare led to severe violence involving machetes and iron bars.
Mupfumi Hospitalized Amid Investigations into Mutare Violence
Mupfumi, known for his Gold Class bus services on the Mutare-Harare and Mutare-Bulawayo routes, was detained amid this crackdown.
A police officer involved in the arrest confirmed that Mupfumi fell ill and was transported to the hospital. A close associate revealed that Mupfumi has been recovering from a stroke suffered after losing $60,000 in a robbery, and his health might have deteriorated due to his incarceration.
Former MP Esau Mupfumi has since been arrested along with 21 others in connection with Mutare Public violence, while Leonard Mukumba is wanted by the police in connection with the same case.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police have confirmed the arrests of multiple individuals, including bus operators, touts, criminal gangs, and rank marshalls, in connection with the violent disturbances that erupted in Mutare on May 23 and May 24, 2024.
