Zibusiso Returns Home After 25 Years to Find Parents Dead

Zibusiso Sibanda, now 45 years old, recently returned to Bulawayo after spending 25 years in South Africa. His story is one of struggle, loss, and determination.

In 1998, Zibusiso left Zimbabwe in search of better opportunities across the border. South Africa promised a brighter future, but life there wasn't as kind as he had hoped. Despite working various jobs, including restaurant gigs, Lady Luck seemed to frown upon him. Frequent run-ins with the law—often due to lack of proper documentation—kept him in and out of prison. Holding down steady employment became nearly impossible.

The turning point came during his final years in South Africa. Zibusiso was caught with suspected stolen property, unable to produce receipts.

He found himself behind bars, facing a lengthy sentence. Little did he know that this imprisonment would forever alter his life trajectory.

Tragically, while Zibusiso was incarcerated, his parents passed away. His mother left this world in 2019, followed by his father in 2020. They had been living in their family home in Magwegwe North. When Zibusiso was finally granted parole and deported back to Zimbabwe last year, he received the heartbreaking news. Not only had he lost his parents, but his father had also sold their house during his illness.

With nowhere else to turn, Zibusiso now works as a car washer and parking marshal on the streets of Bulawayo, right behind the Central Police Station. His resilience and determination shine through, even in the face of adversity.
