Ex-University Lecturer Jailed for 15 Years for Murder
Faith Gudo, a 52-year-old former lecturer at Midlands State University, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for killing his neighbour, David Dube, with a stone. The argument started over some stray cattle, but things escalated quickly.
Gudo denied murdering Dube, but after a trial, the judge, Justice Esther Muremba, found him guilty. When sentencing Gudo, the judge said:
“A reduced sentence might send the wrong message to society, suggesting that providing assistance and compensation to the deceased's family could result in a very lenient punishment. It's crucial for society to maintain respect for human life and the decency to resolve conflicts without resorting to violence. Accordingly, the accused is sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment.”

The court took into account that Gudo helped Dube after realizing what he had done, paid for some of the funeral expenses, and gave half of the compensation demanded by Dube's family.
It turned out that Gudo didn't plan to hurt Dube initially, but things got out of hand when Dube followed him after their first argument. The judge thought this was important to consider when deciding the sentence.
