Intoxicated Man Dies in Mbaura Fire
Bikita, Zimbabwe — On Sunday evening, a fire broke out in a room at the Gomba Garage Complex in Nyika Growth Point, resulting in the death of 37-year-old Edison Maruta.
The cause of the fire was that some cloths in Maruta's room caught fire from a charcoal brazier locally known as ‘mbaura'.
According to Masvingo Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, Maruta was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the incident. It appears that he may have accidentally knocked over the brazier while under the influence.
“Braziers are dangerous when left burning overnight to keep a room warm,” Inspector Dhewa warned. “Not only can they cause fires, but they also produce carbon monoxide, a deadly poisonous gas that can lead to suffocation.”
The circumstances surrounding Maruta's tragic demise unfolded as follows: Around 8:30 pm, Maruta, who was reportedly drunk, retired to bed. His friend and neighbor, Chamunorwa Masarwa (28), sleeping in a nearby house, was jolted awake around 2:45 am by smoke engulfing his own room.

Investigating further, Masarwa discovered the fire raging in Maruta's room. He promptly alerted other neighbors, and together, they managed to extinguish the flames.
Regrettably, Maruta had already succumbed to the fire by the time it was put out. Authorities found a charcoal brazier next to his lifeless body. His remains were transported to Silveira Mission Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
In other news, former police officer Jason Muvevi faces a different kind of battle. Accused of multiple crimes—including four counts of murder and one of attempted murder—Muvevi's trial has been delayed due to his ongoing mental health issues.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Ms. Angeline Munyeriwa confirmed that investigations have been completed, but the trial will proceed only after Muvevi's release from the psychiatric institution.
Harare magistrate Mr. Dennis Mangosi committed Muvevi to the psychiatric hospital last September after two medical doctors concurred that he was mentally ill.
