Nyaradzo Mashayamombe, a fierce advocate for women's rights, has been nominated as one of the three change-maker finalists for the prestigious 2024 UN SDG Action Awards. This nomination is a huge recognition of her relentless efforts to uplift the rights of girls and young women in Zimbabwe.
Women Groups Urged To Intensify Fight Against GBV
The UN SDG Action Awards, organised by the UN SDG Action Campaign, celebrate amazing initiatives and individuals who are creatively working towards a more sustainable, fair, and peaceful world. This year, the competition was super tough, with over 5,500 applications and nominations from 190 countries. This just shows how globally impactful Mashayamombe’s work is.
Mashayamombe will be heading to Rome, Italy, for the awards ceremony on October 29, 2024. Her nomination is a testament to her incredible contributions in promoting the rights of girls and young women, especially in tackling issues like gender-based violence, climate change, and economic empowerment.
Over the years, Mashayamombe has been a powerhouse advocate for girls’ rights in Zimbabwe. Her initiatives, like the Leadership Economic Mentorship Hubs, have empowered 6,500 girls and young women to take on leadership roles in their communities.

Thanks to her, their voices are not just heard but are also shaping public policy and driving social change.
But that’s not all! Mashayamombe has also been a key player in mobilising civil society. Through the Every Child in School campaign, she successfully rallied over 200 organisations in Zimbabwe to support the Education Amendment Act, which aims to improve educational opportunities for children across the country.
Mashayamombe’s nomination is shared with two other amazing finalists: Suvarna Raj, a para-athlete and disability rights advocate from India, and Payzee Mahmod from the UK, who is fighting against child marriage and honour-based violence through storytelling and advocacy.
The recognition of these diverse and impactful change-makers highlights the global commitment to advancing human rights and sustainable development in various sectors.
