Two Norton-based police officers, Patrick Kwashira and Tangai Matomati, were arrested after a botched attempt to flee moments after pocketing a US$5,000 bribe from the Chinese-owned Sunny Yifeng Tiles Zimbabwe Company.
The officers appeared before Harare Magistrate Isheanesu Matova on Thursday, facing extortion charges. They were granted US$200 bail each as investigations continue.

Prosecutors revealed that the drama began when Matomati, who was handling an assault case, discovered the complainant, Tapfuma Nyahonda, had withdrawn charges against four accused individuals.
Seizing the opportunity, Matomati and Kwashira allegedly contacted Sunny Yifeng Tiles, threatening to revive the case unless they were paid US$5,000.
Unbeknownst to the officers, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Internal Investigations unit set up a sting operation.
At the company’s premises along Harare-Bulawayo highway, the officers accepted the bribe from an employee, Terrify Taruvinga.
As they left, ZRP officers swooped in.
Kwashira was caught holding the bribe money, dropped the cash, a CZ pistol magazine with nine rounds, and other personal belongings while attempting to escape.
Matomati managed to flee initially but was later identified and tracked using CCTV footage from the company.
