CALAs To Be Replaced With School-based Projects

Zimbabwe’s is set to phase out Continuous Assessment Learning Activities (CALAs) in and replace it with a simpler but simplified version named School-Based Projects (SBPs) under the new Heritage-Based Curriculum.

This change will take effect in 2025.

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education’s Communications and Advocacy Director, Mr. Taungana Ndoro, outlined the reasons for adopting the Heritage-Based Curriculum.

In 2025, a new curriculum framework, the Heritage-Based Curriculum, will be implemented for subsequent cohorts. This new framework addresses current educational needs and trends, ensuring that students are better prepared for future challenges.”

The new curriculum will include modern teaching methods, updated assessment strategies, and learning outcomes tailored to equip students with the skills needed for a rapidly advancing digital world.

The transition to this new curriculum may include updated teaching methodologies, assessment strategies and learning outcomes. It’s part of a broader effort to enhance educational quality and relevance,” Ndoro explained.

Ndoro revealed that the Heritage-Based Curriculum is similar to the CALA in that students will still carry out practical projects which will count towards their final ZIMSEC exam marks.

He added that SBPs aim to foster critical thinking and creativity, aligning with the educational goals of preparing students for real-world challenges.

The mention of school-based projects for continuous assessment is under the Heritage-Based Curriculum and indicates that, while the CALA has been phased out, students will still engage in practical projects that contribute to their overall assessment.

“SBPs are designed to evaluate students’ learning and skills in a more hands-on, practical manner, aligning with the educational goals of fostering critical thinking and creativity,” Ndoro revealed.
