Contactor ordered to re-do road works
Road started developing potholes a few months after being repaired
COUNCILLORS in Chinhoyi have ordered a contractor under- taking road works in the town to re-do the work done along Chinhoyi Primary School-Brundish and Nemakonde roads.
This follows recommendations by the Council Works and Planning Committee read by Ward 1 Councillor Good Sairos during an ordinary council meeting held last Thursday.
The committee accused the contractor of executing a poor job. Last year, Chinhoyi Municipality contracted Tarcon Private Limited to tar selected roads under tender number 2021 Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme.
However, after the contractor partly completed the roads at some portions of the roads the tarmac started peeling off a few months after, drawing complaints from residents.
Residents posting comments on a social media platform also ordered the authorities not to pay more money to the contractor before the council is satisfied with the contractor’s work.
Some said there was a need to step up monitoring and supervision to ensure quality work and that the contractor should not be allowed to handle the second phase of the roads before they re-work on the portion under contention.
A Brundish resident, who requested anonymity, blamed the authorities for condoning shoddy work.
He blamed the council for failing to reprimand or blacklisting a contractor who does shoddy work.
Last month Chinhoyi Council invited the contractor to an ordinary council meeting, the company Chief Executive Officer, Lawrence Gudo, made a presentation, which left Chinhoyi Town Engineer, Mr Simon Marara under attack from the councillors.
During the meeting, Gudo agreed to fix some areas, which were affected by the rains, and other areas of concern.
When the Telegraph news crew visited, the Tarcon base at Chikonohono Mountain next to Hunyani water reservoir there was no one but there were unattended earth moving equipment, a grader with flat tyres, tipper truck without wheels and other machines covered with dust.
Tarcon Chief Executive Officer, Gudo, was unreachable on his known mobile phone. It was therefore not possible to get a comment.
