Mthuli Introduces Tax on Spectacles

In November 2023, the Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion, Prof Mthuli Ncube, presented the 2024 budget.

Besides allocating money to ministries, he also announced a myriad of new taxes that would burden Zimbabweans.

The Minister announced a hike in the passport fees and a rise in the toll fees for motorists. He also announced a new wealth tax, another on sugar and a tax on vehicle importation.

Because of the new taxes, many companies have raised the prices of their products. Bread is now ranging from US$ 1.20 to US$ 1.30.

To increase the revenue collected in the country, the Government has also introduced a 15% tax on all spectacle frames and lenses.

Prominent journalist Hopewell Chin’ono reported on his social media:

“Bad news for Zimbabweans who wear spectacles: out of desperation caused by misplaced political and economic policies and grand corruption, the Zimbabwean Government has added a 15% tax on all spectacle frames and lenses. This will push up the price of spectacles by not only 15%; The Zimbabwean Government is also charging another extra 5% customs duty tax, which makes the frames and lenses 20% more expensive from today. Call it the Eye Tax, what a shame!”

The information was shared by ZIMSEC’s Public Relations team on X/Twitter and highlighted the time-sensitive nature of resolving queries post-results publication.

ZIMSEC reiterated the urgency, stating:

Results queries are only accepted within 42 days after the publishing of results.”

ZIMSEC explained the significance of symbols such as “M” and “X” in the results.

Candidates encountering the “M” symbol are advised to promptly approach their school for submission of a results query to ZIMSEC, especially in cases where CALA marks are missing.

For those facing the “X” symbol, indicating an absence due to a missing CALA mark or non-participation in a component of the subject, ZIMSEC outlined the resolution process.

Schools are required to submit a results query to ZIMSEC, rectifying the issue once the missing details are provided.

“M symbol denotes Missing mark. This is usually the absence of CALA marks. Candidates should go to the school and ask for a submission of results query to ZIMSEC.

“X symbol denotes absent – This can either be missing CALA mark or absence to one of the exams (component) which complete the Subject. A results query should be submitted by the school to ZIMSEC where the issue will be rectified after the school has submitted the missing details.”

Remarks for each subject come at a cost of US$20.
