Questions Raised after Anti-LGBTQ Protest at GALZ Offices
About a dozen protesters today sprayed graffiti on the wall and briefly camped at the gate of the Gays and Lesbian Association of Zimbabwe (GALZ) offices in Milton Park office in Harare denouncing homosexuals on Sunday.
Laity Protest Against Methodist Church's Gay Stance
In a video shared on social media, a handful of people are seen chanting, “Ng***ani ngadzibude muZimbabwe” which loosely translates to “Homos.e.x.uals must leave Zimbabwe.”
The paltry crowd which only identified itself as a religious group, said it was against their beliefs that a man sleeps with a man or a woman sleeps with a woman.
It is not known whether the protest was sanctioned by the police as according to POSA act, the ZRP has to be notified before any protest or gathering.
This anti-LGBTQ protest comes just two weeks after members of the laity within the United Methodist Church protested at its headquarters ironically also in Milton Park. The laity were also protesting against the church's decision to lift a ban on homos.e.x.uality and allowing gay clergy into full ministry.
Questions Raised after Anti-LGBTQ Protest at GALZ Offices
Zimbabwe just like large parts of Africa, has anti-LGBTQ+ laws and members of the community are discriminated against.
However, the protest at the GALZ offices raised a lot of questions.
Magumbo vaGutu (@magumbolioness) asked: “Ko kana vane maguts acho vanodini kuprotestor nyaya dzematongerwo enyika ne economy yakadai kudhakwa iyi. Uku ndokuri easy ka. Kune ZPF uko dai riot yavasorta kare vave kuParirenyatwa with injuries”
Michael Chiwiya (@BigMic_chew) was cynical about it: “maihweee this is scripted hazvo , GALZ ikutotsvaga hayo bag iyo. mangwana chaiye vamwe vakutopihwa maAsylum nemari yekureba”
Mukundi Nhenhe (@LauderGrove63) said: “This is a protest organised by the Gays & Lesbian Association to show the suppression of “human rights” so that they can lobby for more funds. Did you know that members of GLAZ are paid a monthly salary because they are considering vulnerable members of the society?”
Where Africa and Zimbabwe Stand on Trans
Sekuru Gudo (@sekuru_gudo) said: “This is staged, members of GALZ pretending to be protesting against GALZ for publicity and more funds. Who mobilised those people and from where and when”
