In a plot twist worthy of a soap opera, Innocent Chishumba, who ironically might not be so innocent, has found himself in a bit of a pickle.
Chishumba, who fancied himself as Nyasha Tagwirei, the supposed son of business tycoon Kuda Tagwirei, has been hauled before the court on charges of theft and fraud.
The courtroom drama unfolded before magistrate Dennis Mangosi, who decided to keep Chishumba in custody for a bit longer, probably to give him some time to reflect on his life choices.
Chishumba, who didn't get a chance to plead, will be back in court today for bail considerations. One of the more colourful allegations involves Anyway Mazoe, a teacher at Kwayedza High School and Chishumba's ex-girlfriend.
The court heard that their romance began in September, thanks to a mutual friend, Tichafa Chirewo.
Things took a turn for the bizarre when Chishumba, under his alias Nyasha Tagwirei, convinced Mazoe to hand over her phone. He claimed he wanted to check if she was cheating on him because, you know, trust issues.

Mazoe, perhaps blinded by love or just plain gullible, handed over her phone. Chishumba then vanished with it, using it to con various individuals out of their hard-earned cash by promising them US dollars.
Mazoe only realised the extent of the scam when people started knocking on her door, demanding their money back. She promptly blocked the number and reported the matter to the police.

When the long arm of the law finally caught up with Chishumba over the weekend, he was still in possession of Mazoe's phone. Talk about being caught red-handed!
But wait, there's more! Another victim, Faustina Makuwa, Mazoe's colleague, was also duped. Chishumba, still masquerading as Nyasha, messaged Makuwa asking for the Zimbabwean dollar equivalent of US$550.
Makuwa, perhaps thinking she was helping out a future business mogul, sent the money. Chishumba then pulled a classic disappearing act.
Using the same trick, Chishumba also swindled Noreen Mutaramutswa out of ZWG$6700, promising her the equivalent in US dollars. Spoiler alert: she never saw those dollars.
