Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested 97 people for skipping borders and smuggling goods from other countries.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said 1 312 people have also been arrested throughout the country on Tuesday only for various offences related to contraventions of the National Lockdown regulations, bringing the total cumulative arrests to 52 041 since the commencement of the national lockdown.
Ninety-seven people have been arrested for skipping borders and smuggling goods from neighbouring countries.
“In light of the increase in new Covid-19 cases being detected, we urge members of the public to conscientiously adhere to the measures put in place by Government to minimize the effects of this scourge,” said Ass Comm Nyathi.
“We continue to urge the public to be health and security conscious and assist the police and other security services in the maintenance of law and order. “One returnee escaped from Esikhoveni quarantine centre in Esigodini and the total number of escapees from various quarantine centres in provinces across the country is now 158.
“Escapees who have been arrested are now 26 following the arrest of a 40-year-old woman who absconded from Vuti Quarantine centre in Mashonaland West,” said Ass Comm Nyathi. Meanwhile, Evance Chinyanga, 40, was on Tuesday in Harare Central Business District for illegally dealing in foreign currency.
He was found in possession of RTGS$10 000 cash in new $10 and $5 notes and refused to reveal the source of the cash. Confirming the arrest Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said during the arrest, Chinyanga tried to mobilise his colleagues to attack police officers.
He said police would continue arresting illegal foreign currency dealers who are engaging in criminal acts whilst at the same time disregarding Government’s Covid-19 lockdown measures.
