Robber Presents to Police as the Victim

An armed robber cunningly deceived the police into believing he was a victim of a robbery, only to be apprehended at a hospital.

Godfrey Magadu (31) found himself in hot water when he was arrested at Parirenyatwa Hospital, where he had gone seeking medical help.

Magadu is accused of attempted armed robbery and providing false information to a public official.

He appeared before Harare regional magistrate Mrs. Marehwanazvo Gofa who remanded him in custody. He is expected back in court on October 31.

Currently, he is under guard and hospitalized at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

The court heard that Magadu and his accomplices had planned to rob the Chemical Merchants Company in Waterfalls, Harare.

Armed with three shotguns, they confronted security guards Given Nyakarare and Samson Mupandawana, who were armed with a revolver.

During the attempted robbery, Magadu and his gang forcibly took one of the security guards, Mr. Mupandawana, into an office, assaulting him while demanding information about the location of cash and valuables.

Another security guard, Mr. Nyakarare, managed to escape and hide.

Realising one guard was still outside, Magadu and his accomplices confronted him.

The guard fired two shots, hitting one of the gang members in the forehead, causing his death.

Magadu was shot in the left side of his rib cage but managed to flee.

The gang dropped their shotgun, dragged their fallen comrade about 1km away, and fled the scene.

In an attempt to avoid capture, on October 18, Magadu falsely reported to Sergeant Luke Deza at ZRP Southlea Park, Harare.

He claimed that he had been robbed and shot by four unknown assailants at Masteps, Hopley, Harare.

Using the alias Franklyin Mubaiwa, he said he had sought private medical attention and was referred to the police before receiving treatment due to the gunshot wound.

Taking his report seriously, the police issued a medical treatment request form and arranged for Magadu to be taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital.

Later, he was transferred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, where authorities discovered the truth – he was not a victim but a robber.

Magadu’s accomplice is still on the run.
