Seke Road Accident: 3 Dead | 35 Injured | Cop Charged

New details have emerged regarding the tragic accident that occurred along Seke Road in Harare.

Three people lost their lives, and 35 others were injured when two kombis collided head-on yesterday morning.

The accident happened after Police Officer Sergeant James Makaranga, 37, who was driving one of the kombis, encroached onto the oncoming traffic lane.

The accident took place around 6:45 AM when Sergent Makaranga, who is stationed at the Police Protection Unit in Chitungwiza, attempted to overtake a Mazda Bongo Van turning from St Patrick’s Road onto Seke Road.

During this manoeuvre, Sgt Makaranga’s Toyota Hiace Kombi, which was carrying 15 passengers, encroached onto the oncoming traffic lane and collided head-on with a Nissan Caravan driven by Tashinga Chihava, 22, which had 18 passengers.

Tragically, two passengers, identified as Wayne Chipuriro, 42, and Pecking Feliati, 40, died on the spot. Another passenger succumbed to their injuries upon arrival at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital.

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incident and the loss of lives. Chakanza said:

Police confirm the death of three people and injury of 35 passengers in a road traffic accident along Seke Road.

He revealed the hospitals the injured passengers were taken to, stating:

Among the injured, 17 were rushed to Chitungwiza Hospital, 10 to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital, and 8 to Parirenyatwa Hospital.

Sergeant Makaranga is facing charges under Section 49 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act, Chapter 9:23, which pertains to culpable homicide.

Additionally, both Sergeant Makaranga and Chihava reportedly failed to produce their driver’s licenses when traffic police arrived at the scene.

Investigations into the tragic road accident are ongoing.
