Zimre Teen Swindles Thousands From Fellow Students
A 17-year-old Zimbabwean boy allegedly pulled off a brazen scam, swindling thousands of dollars from unsuspecting high school students under the guise of offering them membership in a SADC Junior Parliament program.
The teenager from Zimre Park, Ruwa, recently appeared before a Harare Magistrate to face fraud charges. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) did not disclose his name, as he is a minor.
According to the NPA, in July 2024, the teen falsely presented himself as a representative of the Junior Parliament and promised students the opportunity to join the Junior Motivators SADC Parliament program.
He allegedly charged the students US$62 for registration and uniforms and an additional US$50 for a camping trip to Domboshava Resort.

However, after collecting the payments, he became evasive, prompting the duped students to report the matter to the police.
At the time of his arrest, the teenager had managed to swindle US$2,640. Unfortunately, the police were unable to recover any of the stolen funds.
Fortunately for the teenager, he will not be attending court sessions from remand prison but from the comfort of home as he was released into the custody of his guardian.
The teenage boy will return to court on 5 September 2024.
