Superstitions Gone Wild: Man Steals Money to Pay Sangoma

In a twist that could only be described as a plot straight out of a comedy sketch, a Bulawayo driver, Bongani Matshazi, found himself behind bars for a rather peculiar reason.

You see, Bongani wasn't just any driver; he was a man on a mission to rid himself of evil spirits. And how did he plan to do that? By stealing a whopping US$7,259 and R10,000 from his employer, of course!

Bongani's grand plan involved paying a traditional healer to cleanse him of these pesky spirits. Unfortunately for him, the only thing that got cleansed was his bank account.

The court heard that Bongani, employed by Zimsend Pvt Ltd, was supposed to transport the money to a supermarket in Plumtree. Instead, he decided to take a detour to the mystical world of traditional healing.

When the money went missing, Bongani tried to cover his tracks by claiming he had been robbed. But the truth soon came out, and it was revealed that he had diverted the funds for his spiritual cleansing.

The court wasn't amused. The magistrate noted that Bongani's moral blameworthiness was sky-high and that he deserved a custodial sentence. Out of the stolen amount, only US$530 was recovered, leaving a significant chunk unaccounted for.

In a rather poetic twist, the magistrate remarked that while Bongani seemed to be a novice in the world of crime, he had “started from the deeper end and had consequently drowned.”

As a result, Bongani was sentenced to six months of effective imprisonment, with parts of his sentence suspended on the condition that he doesn't commit a similar offence in the next five years and that he restitutes the stolen money.
