In a scene straight out of a drama series, Harare Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume stormed into the office of town clerk Engineer Hosiah Chisango, who had just made a surprise return to work.

Eng Chisango, recently released on bail after being charged with corruption, probably didn't expect his first day back to be quite so eventful.
According to an insider, “It appeared Cllr Mafume didn’t want to meet behind closed doors…” Instead, the mayor decided to confront Eng Chisango right in the corridor, much to the shock of onlookers. The mayor was reportedly fuming over the town clerk’s recent testimony before the Justice Cheda Commission of Inquiry, which is digging into corporate governance failures at the Harare City Council since 2017.

Eng Chisango had pointed fingers at councillors, accusing them of corrupt activities that drained the city’s coffers. When the two officials finally came face-to-face, tempers flared, and senior councillors had to step in to prevent a full-blown showdown. Mayor Mafume, brandishing leave application forms like a sword, demanded that Eng Chisango take immediate leave.
Caught off guard by the mayor’s aggressive stance, Eng Chisango retreated to his office and barricaded himself inside. Not long after, a group of councillors loyal to Cllr Mafume gathered in the corridor, chanting for Eng Chisango’s removal.
“It felt like a coordinated effort to oust Eng Chisango and stop him from spilling more beans about corruption before the commission wraps up,” said our source.
After a brief standoff, Eng Chisango finally agreed to take official leave, bringing a temporary end to this episode of Harare’s political soap opera.
