Parents Worried by Mentally Ill Teacher's Behaviour

Parents at Nyahombe Secondary School in Ward 29, Chivi South, are really worried about a teacher with mental health issues. They say his unpredictable behaviour is a big concern, and they want him removed from the school immediately.

Some parents, who prefer to stay anonymous, are scared for their kids' safety. They say the teacher often uses explicit language and lashes out at students, which could escalate into something worse. One parent said:

He only shows up to class when he feels like it, and when he does, he uses vulgar words. He barely teaches, so why is he still here?

A fellow teacher mentioned that this colleague is a threat to the community too. He roams around neighbouring villages, always speaking inappropriately, and was even seen mimicking a church prophet at a local villager’s home. The teacher added:

We’re worried he might get hurt in the villages or become violent. We also fear he could harm children or women.

The teacher’s family is allegedly neglecting him, especially after accusations surfaced that he used charms for power and wealth, which some believe are causing his condition.

The community once tried to protest at the school to get him removed, but they were warned against it and are now waiting for the authorities to act.

Chivi District School Inspector (DSI) Evershine Ndongwe is aware of the issue. He said his office has done its part, and the teacher’s papers are now with the provincial office. Ndongwe explained:

I visited the school and saw him. His condition worsens when he doesn’t take his medication. When he does, you wouldn’t even know he has mental health issues.

They also tracked down his family, finding his ex-wife and daughter. His ex-wife said his condition worsens without medication, and since he lives alone, there’s no one to remind him to take it. Ndongwe added:

When I visited, he was stable. His ex-wife told us they separated because of his illness, as he would turn violent and threaten to kill her.

The teacher has been at the school for nearly 10 years and is in his late fifties.
