Masimba Handpicked to Rebuild Mbare Traders' Market
Zimbabwe – Government has handpicked construction company Masimba Holdings to rebuild the Mbare Market, destroyed by fire recently.
Officials say the fire affected nearly 5,000 traders. Construction of the new market is expected to take at least 7 months.
Although the modernisation of Mbare Market is welcome, questions have been raised about the criteria used to select the contractor.
By law, such projects are supposed to be tendererd with either the government or Harare City Council depending on the partnership. However, no details have been provided on the tender processes around the deal.
At the same time, the contract comes so soon which has aroused long-held suspicions that the misfortunes that befell Mbare Market were premeditated.
