Zim Braces for Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Outbreak

China is currently facing an outbreak of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) and videos on social media purportedly show congested hospitals and overburdened healthcare systems.

Health experts have raised concerns over HMPV, a respiratory virus in other parts of the region afflicting a number of Asian countries.

Meanwhile, China has downplayed the outbreak of flu and said that the country is safe to travel.

India's health ministry has re-assured there is no cause for alarm regarding Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) reports from China and they are monitoring the situation.

In Zimbabwe, a collaborative effort with key stakeholders, the Ministry of Health and Child Care was convened a high-level meeting in Harare to discuss preparation and response measures.

Health and Child Care Deputy Minister, Sleiman Timios Kwidini, said they are implementing intensified monitoring across all points of entry, including airports and borders, to swiftly detect and manage any potential cases.

HMPV is a respiratory virus that is similar to Influenza and can particularly affect children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.

Symptoms of the virus include fever, cough, nasal congestion and difficulty breathing.

We are keeping a close eye on the situation and have already implemented enhanced monitoring measures at all ports of entry. With the Chinese New Year approaching at the end of this month, we anticipate increased travel, including Zimbabweans and Chinese returning from China hence we are taking precautions to mitigate any risks,” said Deputy Minister Kwidini.

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China has sparked global concern, prompting countries like India to closely monitor the virus and its transmission.

The virus commonly causes upper and lower respiratory infections, with symptoms resembling those of a cold or flu.

HMPV can infect individuals of all ages, though it poses a higher risk to young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems, according to the CDC.

Children under five years old, especially infants, older adults, particularly those over 65 and individuals with weakened immune systems or chronic respiratory conditions like asthma or COPD are at higher risk.

HMPV is transmitted through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, close contact like handshakes or touching, and contact with contaminated surfaces followed by touching the mouth, nose, or eyes.

According to the CDC, the virus follows a seasonal pattern, typically circulating during late winter and spring in temperate areas.

The CDC advises taking these measures to lower the risk of HMPV and other respiratory infections:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.
  • Wear masks in crowded areas during outbreaks.
  • Stay home when unwell to prevent spreading the virus.
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces regularly.
