In a bizarre turn of events, a 34-year-old man found himself at the mercy of a self-proclaimed Muslim prophet, who cunningly swindled him out of his vehicle during a supposed purification ritual in Highfield on Tuesday.

Gaen Mpofu, a resident of Ushewokunze, fell victim to the prophecies of a certain Kennedy, an alleged Muslim residing in South Africa, who deceptively claimed that Gaen was plagued by malevolent spirits. This self-styled prophet boasted about possessing extraordinary powers to cleanse Gaen of these evil forces.

As fate would have it, Gaen, who himself follows the Islamic faith, recounted his encounter with Kennedy, revealing how the imposter approached him last Saturday under the guise of a South African Muslim prophet. Kennedy artfully requested Gaen’s assistance in finding accommodation and seeking refuge, they sought shelter at an old mosque in Highfield.

The tale takes a sinister turn when, on Monday evening at approximately 7 p.m., Gaen attended a service at the mosque, crossing paths once again with Kennedy. The imposter engaged Gaen in conversation, asserting his ability to purge malevolent spirits. Intrigued and desperate for a solution, Gaen agreed to undergo the cleansing ritual alongside three other unsuspecting members.

Kennedy proposed conducting the purification ceremony outside the confines of the mosque, and they subsequently ventured to a lodge in Jerusalem (Highfield). It is important to note that they traveled in Gaen’s cherished white Toyota Mark II Grand, bearing the registration ABH 0942. Kennedy secured a room at the lodge where he orchestrated the alleged rituals.

To Gaen’s astonishment, Kennedy commanded him to leave behind his treasured possessions—a Huawei cellphone, a bag brimming with assorted clothes and gadgets—alongside his beloved Toyota Mark II Grand. The false prophet claimed that he needed these items to conclude the overnight ceremony successfully. Trusting Kennedy’s intentions, Gaen complied, fully believing that he would retrieve his property the following day.

However, as dawn broke, Gaen and his fellow believers returned to the lodge, only to discover that Kennedy had vanished into thin air. Utter disappointment and anger gripped Gaen as he realized the extent of his deception.

Now turning to the public for assistance, Gaen implored anyone with information to come forward and aid the police in capturing Kennedy, as well as recovering his stolen vehicle and belongings. Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, the Harare provincial police spokesperson, verified the incident and echoed Gaen’s plea, urging individuals to provide any leads that could facilitate Kennedy’s arrest.
