CUT Student Found in Possession of Marijuana

A 23-year-old student from Chinhoyi University of Technology, Descent Mhomho, has been sentenced to a fine for the unlawful possession of dagga.

Mhomho appeared before the Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court after security personnel at the university received a tip-off about his involvement in the illegal possession of the drug.

On November 12, 2024, university security officers conducted a search of Mhomho’s hostel room, number 223, where they discovered a total of 49 grams of dagga.

The security team acted on the information provided and, after recovering the illegal substance, handed the student over to the CID Chinhoyi for further investigation.

Mhomho was subsequently charged with unlawful possession of dagga, a violation under Zimbabwe’s narcotics laws.

Additionally, the court imposed a 6-month prison sentence, which was wholly suspended for a period of five years, meaning Mhomho will avoid serving time unless he commits another offense within that period.

The case highlights ongoing efforts by local authorities and institutions to combat drug abuse and ensure a safe environment for students.

The university’s proactive stance in identifying and addressing illegal drug use on campus is part of broader initiatives aimed at promoting student welfare and upholding the law.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe continues to support efforts to curb drug abuse, with a firm commitment to reducing crime and promoting a drug-free environment, particularly in educational institutions.
