Givemore Mutamba (25) and Tatenda Ngwenya (22) have been sentenced to death after having been found guilty of murdering a 51-year-old woman and taking turns to have sex with the corpse.
The two accused from Zvishavane appeared before the Bulawayo High Court Judge Justice Maxwell Takura in Gweru who gave the criminals a death sentence due to the severity of the crime committed.
Justice Maxwell Takura said the crime was committed in a horrific manner and deserved the highest level of punishment which is death.
“Your level of cruelty on an innocent elderly woman is shocking, satisfying your sexual needs of an innocent woman. The courts are there to protect society from predators like you and you are hereby both sentenced to death by hanging”, Said Justice Takuva.
Mutamba and Ngwenya committed the crime on December 21, 2017, but was arrested after the matter was reported to the police as the two proceeded to rob the deceased at her homestead before the attack.
According to Mr. Samuel Pedzisayi, Mutamba and Ngwenya committed the crime in a horrific manner
“They went to the deceased homestead with a machete which they used to open the kitchen door as the deceased was preparing to go to bed with her four grandchildren around 8.30 pm
When the old woman tried to go back home with her nine month-year-old baby strapped to her back heading for the neighbours home for safety that is when the criminal persons dragged her to a nearby bush before ransacking her home,” he said
Mr pedzisayi explained how the criminals murdered the deceased before raping the corpse
“They attacked her with a machete and took turns to rape her before and after she died and then dragged her corpse which still had the child strapped to its back to a mine shaft where they threw the body and the child”, said Pedzisayi.
The body was later discovered by a villager around 2 am after hearing the cries of the baby from the shaft.
