Manchester City lost to Man Utd in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday night at the Etihad Stadium 1-0 but proceeded to the final 3-2 on aggregate.

Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero both had goals disallowed for City in the match while scorer Matic was sent off for United late on after an accumulation of fouls when he was already on a booking.

The hosts dominated the early stages of the tie and forced David de Gea into three good saves in the opening 15 minutes from Sergio Aguero and Riyad Mahrez.

City appeared nervous after the break but Sterling missed a golden chance from a counter-attack after 59 minutes when he went past De Gea but blasted the ball over the bar.

David Silva had a great opportunity to equalise but instead of shooting when unmarked inside the area, he passed to Ilkay Gundogan who failed to get his shot away.

City have now become only the third team to reach three League Cup finals in a row and will face Aston Villa in the Wembley showpiece on the first weekend of March.

After the match, Pep Guardiola praised five Manchester United players following Man City defeat.

While the Catalan was impressed with the overall team performance from United he singled out Matic, Fred, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof for special praise after the win.

Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire dismissed the notion that Manchester United’s players had “mixed emotions” after beating Man City in the Carabao Cup second leg but losing on aggregate.

“The boys are disappointed,” Maguire told MUTV when asked if the team felt mixed emotions after the game.

“We had belief that we could come here, win the game and go through in the tie. We got ourselves in a great position, a perfect position at half-time.

“Don’t get me wrong, we rode our luck at times in the first half — David [de Gea] was excellent — and obviously we wanted to stay in the game until the last 20 minutes where we felt we could put pressure on them. It was hard when we went down to 10 men.

“We knew the first goal was crucial and if we got the first goal tonight we’d go on and win the tie. It wasn’t to be. The last 15 to 20 minutes we felt we’d put them under a lot of pressure and it’d be a nervy stadium. We could have created more chances than we did.”

The loss came just a few hours after United had confirmed the signing of their long term target Bruno Fernandes
