Thokozani Khupe has confirmed that MDC Alliance youths temporarily stopped her from attending Gogo Chamisa burial in Gutu on Wednesday.
Thokozani Khupe’s spokesperson Khaliphani Phugeni, who accompanied her to the funeral confirmed the incident.
He also confirmed that MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa also interfered and stopped his supporters from barring Khupe from attending the funeral.
Phugeni said, “We went to Chiwara in Gutu to pay our last respects to the late Gogo Chamisa, but some MDC-A hooligans embarrassed us at the funeral, but fortunately Chamisa rescued us. We managed to attend the burial proceedings, but the environment was tense, though it was not that serious as compared to what happened during the late MDC-T founding leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s funeral in Hamanikwa, Buhera. Zimbabweans should accept politics of tolerance. With the events which are currently happening, the MDC-A hooligans did take the issue lightly.”
He also confirmed that Khupe was not injured. Phugeni added that supporters should be politically tolerant.
“No one was injured during the melee. It’s a regrettable occurrence. Politicians should stop politicking at funerals,” he said.
On Twitter, MDC Alliance party spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere also confirmed that Chamisa had said the funeral was not political and open to people from all parties.
Those who attended can confirm that President @nelsonchamisa announced that the proceedings were not political & open to all. He emphasized the need for all mourners to be respected. Members complied. Let’s allow the family to grieve without this cheap political point scoring.
