Steamy bedroom antics are leading to injuries for many people, with bruising, carpet burn and UTI’s named the most common disasters

While many Brits enjoy getting hot and heavy under the sheets, recent figures have revealed that a staggering 42% of people have previously experienced a sex injury. From bruises to broken penises, your steamy bedroom antics can put you in harm’s way, according to a study by sexual wellness retailer Lovehoney.

The survey of 1,003 adults found that women (47%) were more prone to bedroom disasters than men (33%), and people aged between 25 and 35 were also found to be the most susceptible to sustaining sex injuries (66%).

When it came to the most common cause of bedroom mishaps, bruising landed on top, as experienced by 33% of people who have previously had a sex injury. This was closely followed by carpet burn (31%) and UTIs (29%).

Penetrative sex was by no means the only cause of bedroom accidents, as almost half of male respondents admitted to experiencing sex-related injuries whilst either giving or receiving oral sex, compared to just 17% of women.

After uncovering the sex injuries most commonly sustained, sexologist Chantelle Otten has provided some advice on how to avoid experiencing these bedroom disasters in the future.

Bruises

The sexpert explained:

“Bruises can be mild to moderate and occur when capillaries under the skin burst. Hickeys, spanking and rough sex are the most common culprits of bruising, so it’s best to approach these acts with caution. If you are in pain, icing the area or paracetamol should do the trick.”

UTI’s

“Women can significantly reduce the chances of getting a UTI if they pee before and after sex, as this flushes unwanted bacteria from the urethra. Whereas it’s slightly different for men; they should wait 15 minutes after you’ve had penetrative sex to pee.”

Vaginal tear

Vaginal tearing was experienced by 18% of people who have had a sex injury and it occurs when there is too much friction or rough penetration.

Chantelle said:

“It’s important to ensure you are aroused before engaging in penetration (with fingers, penis or toy,) go slow to gently stretch the area, and use lots of lots of lube. Always.”

Check out the most common bedroom injuries – according to Lovehoney – below:

  3. UTI – 29%

It likely comes as no surprise that sexual mishaps and injuries occur most frequently in the bedroom, as reported by 56% of respondents.

Though it was also found that people sustain sex injuries in a number of other locations; nearly one in four occur whilst getting steamy in the shower and one in five when getting frisky in a hotel room. Some of the more scandalous locations people experienced sex injuries included aeroplane toilets and the workplace.

Encountering an injury while joining the mile-high club was three times more likely to happen to men when compared to women.
