Breaking News: Kasukuwere Barred from Contesting in 2023 Elections
His presidential hopes have been shattered as his candidature was thrown out by High Court.
The former Minister Saviour Kasukuwere has been barred from contesting the Presidential elections in Zimbabwe.
Kasukuwere recently dangled a US$1 billion Gukurahundi Compensation Fund that he said was vital for uniting the nation. The move was heavily criticised as misdirected and insincere since he [Kasukuwere] was unrepentant about his misdeeds including his participation in the 2008 electoral violence whilst in Zanu-PF.
He has remained domiciled in South Africa, fearing to return to Zimbabwe after his nemesis ED Mnangagwa's functionaries said Kasukuwere was on the wanted list as he has pending court cases.
The High Court ruling is seen as a blow to the hopes of a contestant whom some quarters believe to have the backing of the deep state.
It's however not clear what this judgement means on the outcome of the August 2023 plebiscite. Some had seen Kasukuwere’s participation as a boon for Chamisa & the CCC since Kasukuwere was believed to be dividing Zanu-PF's votes. On other hand, others saw the Kasukuwere-Mnangagwa duel as the continuation of the ruling party's factional wars.
It remains to be seen as to what steps Kasukuwere take from here.
