Panic as ZIMCHE Deregisters 7 Foreign Universities

The regulatory body responsible for accrediting universities in Zimbabwe has announced the deregistration of seven foreign universities including those who were offering scholarships.

Acute Shortage of Medical Training Facilities

Notably, one of these universities had enlisted the popular musician Gemma Griffiths as its face.

The Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE) made the announcement through a notice published in The Sunday Mail.

According to ZimCHE, degrees from these deregistered institutions hold no value and are essentially worthless pieces of paper.

This decision by ZimCHE comes amidst its recent declaration that unaccredited institutions are prohibited from conferring honorary doctorate degrees as this is a violation of the law.

The statement released in The Sunday Mail urged the general public to exercise caution and thoroughly verify the accreditation status of foreign universities before enrolling.

Panic as ZIMCHE Deregisters 7 Foreign Universities

ZimCHE emphasized the importance of considering the accreditation status of these institutions to ensure the quality and legitimacy of higher education for their children.

They further highlighted the potential consequences of studying at an unaccredited institution, including financial loss and adverse impacts on academic qualifications and career prospects.

Part of the ZIMCHE statement reads:

“In light of this development, we strongly advise members of the public to verify the accreditation status of foreign universities they intend to enrol with to consider for their children’s university education. Studying at an unaccredited institution may result in financial loss and have serious implications for one’s academic qualification and career prospects.”

The following foreign universities have been deregistered and are no longer accredited in Zimbabwe:

  • Girne American University (Northern Cyprus),
  • Sharda University of India (India),
  • Near East University (Northern Cyprus),
  • University of Kyrenia (Northern Cyprus),
  • The European University of Lefke (Northern Cyprus), and
  • University of Nicosia (Northern Cyprus).

Furthermore, Parul University (India), which recently appointed popular musician Gemma Griffiths as its brand ambassador, has also suffered the same fate and is no longer accredited in Zimbabwe.
