Takura & Tryson Chimbetu Win Battle Against Substance Abuse

Takura Shonhayi has succeeded in his battle with drug abuse and has set his sights on a new collaboration with renowned Nigerian musician Davido in a music collaboration.

After a five-week stay in rehabilitation, Takura said he is ready for a comeback as he now has a clear mind.

Speaking to StarFM's DJ Eve at the Unplugged Broadcast, he said he has a lot in the offing and is ready to entertain his fans.

This is my first performance of 2024. I was excited to get back to the stage, you know.

It was great, I have been performing at Unplugged since 2014.

I have one (collaboration) with Davido and more are coming.

Takura, who confessed to drug abuse, hailed his manager Mike Rich, for taking him into rehab.

I was going through the most, this is my manager Mike Rich.

I was kind of on drugs, I was losing myself and he took me to rehab for five weeks and got to have a clear mind.

His manager said it was easy to convince Takura to check into rehabilitation.

Takura is not the only high profile rapper in Zimbabwe who has checked into rehabilitation.

Last year, Saintfloew won his battle against drug abuse after seeking help at a South African health facility. His benefactor, Tinashe Mutarisi, funded the cost of rehabilitation in South Africa.

Musician Tryson Chimbetu says he is a changed man after undergoing a stint at a rehabilitation centre last year, as he struggled with a drug and alcohol addiction.

Once touted as the heir to the Dendera throne, Tryson has struggled with substance abuse over the last few years.

I am now in a better space as compared to last year when I was fighting drug and substance abuse.

I was living in my world after I became an addict but I would like to thank God.

I have realised that we can conquer our demons if we are serious by undergoing rehabilitation as was the case with me.

He went on to thank several people who he said stood behind him during his ordeal, including his family.

It took a lot of sacrifice from a lot of people like Takemore Mazuruse of Zinest, my family members and other friends who made sure that I got rehabilitated.

I am happy that I am the real Tryson after rehabilitation.

I am ready to help others as an anti-drug champion. I also wish we could get more rehabilitation centres around Zimbabwe to save people who are suffering from addiction.

We have joined hands with other organisations which are here to get to the core of the issues pushing our young people to indulge in drug and substance abuse.

Today is just a launch of the idea but the hope is that beyond today, we continue empowering our young people, we continue coming to our communities, and we identify their talents.

We have noted that some people indulge in drugs due to early marriages, gender-based violence and other issues that we are tackling today.
