SAPS Clears Zimbo Accused of SASKO Murders
JOHANNESBURG – South African police have clarified that a Zimbabwean man, falsely identified online as the shooter in the deaths of two Sasko bread company employees, is not a suspect in the murders.
An image of the man, named Martin Mugayi, circulated widely on social media with the erroneous claim that he was involved in the shooting. However, the man’s real identity has not been independently confirmed.
Western Cape police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie addressed the media on Thursday, stating that no arrests have been made in connection with the May 16 killings.
“Be advised that a 28-year-old Zimbabwean national was arrested in Beaufort-West yesterday, May 22, 2024, as an undocumented person. However, he is not a suspect in the Delft double murder of a week ago,” said Pojie.

The man is expected to appear in the Beaufort-West Magistrates’ Court soon.
The chilling incident was captured on a dashcam, showing three Sasko employees sitting in a bread delivery truck in Delft, a township on the outskirts of Cape Town.
They were attacked by three men, and a gunman was seen shooting at the trio, robbing them afterward. Two of the employees died at the scene, while the third survived with gunshot wounds.
Social media posts falsely claimed that police had received a tip-off from a community member about the whereabouts of one of the wanted suspects, misidentified as the Zimbabwean.
The misinformation originated from a screenshot of a WhatsApp group message, which included a case number and information on the alleged suspect.
