In a significant ruling, Magistrate Colleta Ncube has acquitted Senator Jameson Timba and the group known as #Avondale78 of disorderly conduct charges, ending their three-month ordeal in prison. The group was arrested in June at Senator Timba's private residence.

The magistrate ruled that the alleged gathering of the 77 Harare residents was at a private residence, and therefore, they did not commit any offense as alleged by prosecutors and police officers, who reportedly assaulted them upon arrest.
Today marks 80 days since former Zimbabwean cabinet minister and opposition leader Jameson Timba, along with 77 others, were arbitrarily arrested, beaten, and jailed without bail.
These pro-democracy activists were simply gathering at Timba’s home to commemorate the Day of the African Child on June 16, 2024. Since then, they have been in prison.
