Inside Job: $4million Gone in Bulawayo Ecobank Heist
Seven armed robbers casually approached a Cash-In-Transit truck outside a bank in Bulawayo’s Central Business District yesterday and loaded around US$4 million in cash into a waiting vehicle parked nearby.

The heist unfolded with a surprising calmness that made it seem more like a scene from a movie than a real-life crime. The Cash-In-Transit truck was stationed outside an Ecobank branch, close to the offices of the Chronicle and Sunday News.
It appeared that the robbers operated with impunity, as if they had paralyzed Bulawayo, allowing them to take as much cash as they wanted without fear of repercussions. CCTV footage from the scene shows the robbers moving leisurely and in control throughout the robbery.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that investigations are underway regarding the armed robbery that took place on October 3, 2024, at a financial institution located at the corner of 9th Avenue and Fife Street in Bulawayo.
“Initial reports indicate that US$4 million in cash has been stolen. The way this incident unfolded suggests the possibility of an inside job or a leak of information,” he stated.
Nyathi assured the public that the police would ensure that justice is served impartially as investigations progress. He encouraged anyone with information about the incident to contact the National Complaints Desk at (0242) 703631, reach out via WhatsApp at 0712800197, or report to the nearest police station.
