Zimbabwean authorities have arrested nine individuals for engaging in the illegal mining of gold at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) campus.

According to a Twitter post by the Zimbabwean police, an operation was carried out on July 11th at both the NUST campus and the Bulawayo City Council Khumalo pit.

During the operation, nine individuals were arrested for their involvement in illegal gold mining activities.

The police also announced the recovery of various items, including 85 kg of gold ore, a generator, two picks, a hammer, two water pumps, two shovels, an axe, and a machete.

The arrest led to the recovery of 85 kilogrammes of gold ore, a generator, two picks, a hammer, two water pumps, two shovels, an axe and a machete.

The problem of property invasion by gold panners is an ongoing issue in Zimbabwe. The incident at the NUST campus is just one example of this larger problem.

In a similar incident that took place recently, a family from Kwekwe had a harrowing experience when part of their house collapsed into an underground mining tunnel that was being illegally operated beneath their home.

Fortunately, the family narrowly escaped death in that incident. These incidents highlight the dangers and risks associated with illegal mining activities and the urgent need for effective measures to address this issue in Zimbabwe.

The Rusike family were not aware that they had been residing above a mining tunnel for an extended period.

They became aware of the mining activities underground when they started hearing noises and wisely decided to evacuate the house. Subsequently, part of their house collapsed into the tunnel after they had vacated the premises.
