8 New Magistrates Sworn In

To ease the workload on Zimbabwean Magistrate Courts Magistrate, The government of Zimbabwe has sworn in 8 more magistrates, Daily News reports. The 8 sworn in are:
Charity Tonongera,
Vavariro Gabi,
Chiuta Dube,
Patricia Sanganza-Kamwanda,
Tamara Chibindi,
Nomagugu Maphosa,
Grace Tupiri
Samkelisiwe Gumbo
Chief Magistrate Munamato Mutevedzi said this to the Daily News:
The swearing-in of new magistrates will go a long way in easing pressure on the current bench. The establishment of 250 magistrates that exists at the moment was set up in the 1980s and as the population of the country grew, there has not been a corresponding expansion of that establishment.
When we look at 250 magistrates against a population of about 15 million people, there is certainly a disparity in that regard. This means a single magistrate has a mammoth task as he or she is expected to preside over hundreds of thousands of cases in a single year. The magistrates receive not less than 100 000 cases that come through our various courts across the country.
