Marjorie Ngwenya, a British-born, Zimbabwean-raised actuary been appointed by the Bank of England as an external member of the Prudential Regulation Committee (PRC).
Ngwenya is a coach, speaker, consultant and non-executive director who is passionate about personal development.
Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, said
‘We delighted to welcome Marjorie to the PRC. She is bringing a wealth of experience on the insurance side and will make a valuable contribution to the work of the Committee.”
Ngwenya is Past President of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA), headquartered in the UK. She was elected by the IFoA Council to become the first president to be based outside the UK. She is also the youngest president in the organisation’s 160 year history, the third female and the first person of colour. As a resident of South Africa, she works with global clients.
Marjorie has worked across diverse geographies and cultures and resided in the UK, Netherlands, Canada, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Her career began in an audit firm and subsequently worked in consultancy, direct insurance and reinsurance across the fields of pensions, life and health insurance and risk management.
Marjorie served as the first president of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries based outside the UK. She is also the youngest president in the IFoA’s 160 year history, the third female and the first person of colour to have held this role.
Marjorie serves an independent non-executive director at Tangerine Life (Nigeria) and its holding company Tangerine Financial. She is the chairperson of the Canon Collins Trust (UK) and a trustee of the Legal Resources Centre (South Africa).
In her executive career, she was a member of the Group Executive Committee of Liberty Group in South Africa, serving as Chief Strategist. Prior to that, she was Chief Risk Officer for Old Mutual’s African Operations.
Marjorie is a keen linguist and speaks the following languages: English , Shona, French and Dutch.
She was recently featured on SABC after her appointment to the Bank Of England.
