DEVELOPING: Businessperson and pastor, Dr Shingi Munyeza has been arrested.
Pro-government and state-run media outlets reported that businessperson and church pastor Shingi Munyeza had been arrested for allegedly defrauding a Harare woman of US$85,000.
State media report the Zimbabwe Republic Police confirming that Shingi Munyeza was arrested on Friday night on allegations that in January this year, the clergyman defrauded a woman of some US$85,000 she had received as a severance package from her former employer.
Munyeza allegedly convinced the complainant to give him the money as an investment while promising to return US$100,000 by the end of January. Shingi Munyeza however failed to pay back the money prompting the complainant to report the matter to the police who arrested him.
However, when contacted for comment, Shingi Munyeza said he has not been arrested as suggested by state media reports, but was invited to the police over a civil matter. After that, he went back home, he says. Munyeza said:
“I'm at home right now; it was a civil matter. I went to the police and came back home. It's a civil matter; someone is trying to use the police as a debt collector.”
Munyeza says it's a civil matter.
